"Squash" is the generic term for the four species of the Cucurbita family that originated in Central America. Summer quash (and some winter varieties) are Cucurbita pepo, which also includes true pumpkins and acorn squash. The summer/winter distinction is not taxonomic, but instead reflects when varieties are harvested and their suitablity for storage.
Summer squash come in a cornucopia of shapes and sizes. This year we are growing:
starship, a medium-sized green scalloped patty pan;
magda, a pale green "cousa" type zucchini;
bush baby, a true baby zucchini;
zepher, a yellow straight-neck variety that look like the tip was dipped in green ink; and,
tigress, a medium striped zucchini.
